Mark Hadfield is a Reader within the School of Design, Engineering and Computing at Bournemouth University. His career began by completing a four-year officer cadetship with the Royal Fleet Auxiliary and serving as a sea-going marine engineer for another four years. He then commenced a degree in Mechanical Engineering at Brunel University. During his academic studies he worked for Marchant Filer Dixon (consulting engineers) and the Royal Aerospace Establishment (Farnborough). After graduation he worked for AE Piston Products as a Senior Project Engineer. After this he completed a PhD in ceramic tribology with SKF Engineering and Research Centre (The Netherlands) and Brunel University (UK). Subsequently he was employed as a lecturer at Brunel University for five years before joining Bournemouth University in 1997. His research interest's include tribology design related to sustainable development and rolling contact fatigue of ceramics and coatings.

Christopher Ciantar graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Malta in 1994. Having been employed by the Government of Malta as a building services engineer, he won a scholarship to pursue his studies leading to an MSc degree in building services engineering, graduating with distinction from Brunel University, London. Here he was also awarded the Leslie Zisman Prize for best performance. He is currently a researcher working on a three year EPSRC funded project as part of the ‘Design for Whole Life Cycle’ programme held at Bournemouth University. His areas of interest are focused on the environmental performance of products used within the building services industry. He is a graduate member of the Institute of Engineering Designers (UK).

Jinsheng joined the Unit in October 1997 after a year as Visiting Academic at the MSI Research Institute, Loughborough University. In 1982 he became a member of the teaching staff and held the post as Associate Professor (from 1993) at Xinjiang Institute of Technology, China. Jinsheng has written several research papers and edited two books published in 1990 and 1991 titled "American Graduate Research Guide" and "A new Integrated Software Package - Smart V 3.0". He held a post as Visiting Scholar (tribology design) at the University of Washington, Seattle, USA for eighteen months (1986 to 1988). In 1994 Jinsheng was appointed MSc supervisor in Machine Building and Mechatronics at the Xinjiang Institute of Technology.

Ying joined the Unit in February 1998 from the Shenyang Institute of Aeronautical Engineering, China. After completing an MSc at the Northwestern Polytechnical University, China, he joined the Risoe National Laboratory in Denmark (1989). Since 1994 he holds the post as Associate Professor at the Shenyang Institute. During 1996 he spent a year as Visiting Academic within the Computer Science Department at the Queen Mary and Westfield College. He has numerous publications in the following areas: material fracture, safety engineering and ergonomics.

Michael graduated in 1994 in Engineering Business Development from Bournemouth University. After graduation he lectured/tutored postgraduate and undergraduate MA and BSc students at Bournemouth University. He has completed a PGCE as a mathematics teacher at Portsmouth University in 1997 and has some teaching experience. Michael's PhD research is funded by EPSRC and is titled "Sustainable Design of Boundary Lubricant Additives within Hydrocarbon Refrigerator Compressors".
